Wesley Dodds, known as the Sandman, first appeared in New York World's Fair Comics #1 (1939) from DC Comics. He is a vigilante operating primarily in the 1930s and 40s. Unlike many other heroes of the Golden Age, Sandman possesses no superpowers.
Dodds is a wealthy businessman who suffers from prophetic dreams. Haunted by these visions of impending crimes, he dons a gas mask and a trench coat and utilizes a gas-powered gun that emits a sleeping gas to subdue criminals.
He is aided by his girlfriend, Dian Belmont, who eventually becomes his wife. Together, they fight crime and navigate the challenges of their dangerous lifestyle.
