Biography:
George A. Romero, born February 4, 1940, in the Bronx, New York, was a groundbreaking filmmaker best known for his revolutionary contributions to the horror genre, particularly his creation of the modern zombie archetype.
His 1968 film, Night of the Living Dead, though made on a shoestring budget, redefined horror cinema. It introduced slow-moving, flesh-eating ghouls and established key elements of zombie lore, including their vulnerability to headshots and their propensity to spread their infection through bites.
Romero expanded on this mythos with sequels like Dawn of the Dead (1978), a satirical commentary on consumerism, and Day of the Dead (1985), exploring societal breakdown under zombie apocalypse. He also directed Land of the Dead (2005), Diary of the Dead (2007), and Survival of the Dead (2009), continuing his exploration of themes like social injustice and human nature through the lens of zombie horror.
Beyond the "Dead" series, Romero directed other notable horror films, including Martin (1977) and Creepshow (1982). His work profoundly influenced generations of filmmakers and popularized zombie narratives across various media. George A. Romero died July 16, 2017, leaving behind a lasting legacy as the "Godfather of the Zombie Film."
