R5-D4, often referred to as "Red," is an R5-series astromech droid who briefly appears in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. He is part of the consignment of droids offered for sale by the Jawas on Tatooine.
Initially, Luke Skywalker's Uncle Owen Lars selects R5-D4 to purchase for moisture farm maintenance. However, as R5-D4 is being loaded onto the Lars' landspeeder, his motivator malfunctions catastrophically, causing him to release smoke and sparks. This forces Owen to reject R5-D4 and instead purchase R2-D2.
This seemingly random malfunction is later suggested in supplemental materials to be a deliberate act on R5-D4's part. Allegedly, he was aware of R2-D2's crucial mission to deliver the Death Star plans to the Rebel Alliance and sabotaged himself to ensure R2-D2 would be purchased instead. This interpretation casts R5-D4 as a selfless hero who sacrificed himself for the greater good.
