Biography:
R5-D4, often referred to as "Red," is an R5-series astromech droid featured in the Star Wars universe. His primary function is similar to that of other astromech droids: spacecraft repair and navigation, utilizing his various tools and data storage capabilities.
He is briefly owned by Jawas on Tatooine and almost purchased by Luke Skywalker and Owen Lars. However, R5-D4 intentionally sabotages himself, experiencing a "bad motivator," prompting the Larses to instead purchase R2-D2.
This malfunction, while seemingly accidental, may have been a deliberate act. Some theories suggest R5-D4 was aware of a critical mission for R2-D2 and sacrificed himself to ensure R2-D2 would reach the Rebellion with the plans for the Death Star. He is later seen repaired and working at Mos Eisley Spaceport.
