Faramir is a key character in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy novel, *The Lord of the Rings*. He first appears in *The Two Towers*. He is the younger son of Denethor II, the Steward of Gondor, and the brother of Boromir.
He is portrayed as a wise, just, and compassionate leader, contrasting with his more prideful and power-hungry brother and father. Faramir is a captain of the Rangers of Ithilien and displays a deep love for Gondor and its people.
Unlike Boromir, Faramir resists the temptation of the One Ring when Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee encounter him in Ithilien, demonstrating his moral strength and loyalty to Gondor without seeking ultimate power. He understands the Ring's danger and chooses to aid the hobbits in their quest.
His relationship with his father is strained, as Denethor favors Boromir and often undervalues Faramir's contributions.
