Ares, in the Marvel Universe, is based on the Greek god of war. He is a son of Zeus and Hera, and brother to Athena, though their relationship is often adversarial. Ares is a powerful Olympian god, possessing superhuman strength, durability, and regenerative abilities. He revels in combat and conflict, viewing war as the ultimate expression of life.
Unlike his mythological counterpart, Marvel's Ares has a complex history. He has frequently clashed with Earth's heroes, particularly Hercules and the Avengers, but has also served alongside them. Ares joined Norman Osborn's Dark Avengers, briefly filling the role of the team's equivalent to Thor, before ultimately betraying them.
Driven by a desire for worthy opponents and the thrill of battle, Ares often finds himself at odds with both gods and mortals. Despite his bloodthirsty nature, he possesses a twisted sense of honor and loyalty, making him a formidable, yet unpredictable, figure within the Marvel Universe. He was ultimately killed during the Siege of Asgard by the Sentry.
