Biography:
Jay Garrick is the Golden Age Flash, a founding member of the Justice Society of America. He first appeared in *Flash Comics* #1 (January 1940). Garrick gained his super speed after accidentally inhaling hard water vapors in a laboratory.
Unlike later Flashes who draw speed from the Speed Force, Jay's powers were originally explained as a mutation caused by the chemicals, granting him the ability to move and think at superhuman speeds. His signature look includes a metal helmet modeled after Mercury, the Roman god of speed.
As the Flash, he fought crime throughout the 1940s, and was later retconned into existing on a parallel Earth (Earth-Two) within the DC Multiverse. He served as a mentor figure to younger heroes, especially Barry Allen, the Silver Age Flash.
