Magneto is a Marvel Comics character associated primarily with the X-Men. He first appeared in *X-Men* #1 (September 1963).
Born Max Eisenhardt (later Erik Lehnsherr), Magneto is a powerful mutant with the ability to control and manipulate magnetic fields. His powers extend to manipulating metal.
He often acts as an antagonist to the X-Men, believing that mutants are superior to humans and should rule the world. This is rooted in his experiences as a Holocaust survivor where he witnessed the worst of humanity. Although he's considered an antagonist, he has, at times, fought alongside the X-Men and shared a complex relationship with their leader, Professor X.
Magneto's motives are driven by a desire to protect mutants from persecution, even if it means using aggressive or violent methods.
