Bilbo Baggins, in his older years as depicted in The Hobbit, is a hobbit of the Shire, residing in his comfortable and well-appointed hobbit-hole, Bag End. He is characterized as a homebody, content with a quiet life of eating, smoking pipe-weed, and generally avoiding adventure.

This peaceful existence is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Gandalf the wizard and a company of thirteen dwarves, who invite him on a quest to reclaim their treasure from the dragon Smaug. Though initially reluctant, Bilbo's Tookish adventurous spirit, inherited from his mother's side, compels him to accept the proposition.
