Bilbo Baggins is a fictional character created by J.R.R. Tolkien, first appearing in the novel *The Hobbit*, published in 1937. He is a Hobbit of the Shire, known for his comfortable and predictable life.

His peaceful existence is disrupted when the wizard Gandalf and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive at his hobbit-hole, Bag End. They enlist him as a burglar for their quest to reclaim their treasure from the dragon Smaug, under the Lonely Mountain.
