Biography:
Isildur is a character in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, most notably The Lord of the Rings.
He first appears in The Fellowship of the Ring during the Council of Elrond's recounting of the history of the One Ring.
Isildur was the elder son of Elendil and, along with his father, escaped the destruction of Númenor. He was instrumental in founding the kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor in Middle-earth. During the War of the Last Alliance, Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand after his defeat.
Despite the counsel of Elrond and Círdan to destroy the Ring in the fires of Mount Doom, Isildur claimed it for his own as weregild for the deaths of his father and brother. He was later ambushed and killed by Orcs at the Gladden Fields, and the Ring was lost in the Anduin river for centuries.
