Isildur is a significant figure in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth legendarium, first appearing in print in The Fellowship of the Ring, though his actions are detailed in The Silmarillion.
He was the elder son of Elendil, and a High King of Gondor and Arnor. He is most known for severing the One Ring from Sauron's hand during the War of the Last Alliance, effectively defeating the Dark Lord, at least temporarily.
However, instead of destroying the Ring as advised by Elrond and Cirdan, Isildur claimed it as his own weregild for the death of his father and brother. He was later ambushed by Orcs at the Gladden Fields and killed. The Ring slipped from his finger and was lost in the Anduin river for centuries.
