Hiruzen Sarutobi, also known as the Third Hokage, was a central figure in the Naruto series. He was the leader of Konohagakure (the Hidden Leaf Village) for an extended period, succeeding the Second Hokage.

Hiruzen was renowned for his immense skill and knowledge of ninjutsu. He was taught by both the First and Second Hokages, mastering an unparalleled number of techniques, earning him the title "The Professor."

He was responsible for training the legendary Sannin: Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru. While he valued their potential, he was deeply disappointed by Orochimaru's descent into darkness and immoral experiments.

Hiruzen initially retired, passing the title of Hokage to Minato Namikaze (Naruto's father). However, following Minato's death, he reassumed the mantle. He eventually died fighting Orochimaru during the Konoha Crush, sacrificing himself to seal away Orochimaru's arms and prevent further destruction.

Hiruzen was portrayed as a wise and benevolent leader, deeply committed to the well-being of Konoha and its inhabitants, even though some decisions and his leniency towards some of his pupils were controversial.
