Johann Schmidt, better known as the Red Skull, is a major antagonist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly within the Captain America storyline. He first appeared in the 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger.
Schmidt was initially a high-ranking officer in the Nazi paramilitary organization Hydra, during World War II. Obsessed with harnessing advanced technology, he sought to weaponize the Tesseract, a powerful artifact containing an Infinity Stone, to achieve global domination and transcend Hitler's vision.
After injecting himself with an imperfect Super-Soldier Serum, Schmidt's appearance was permanently altered, resulting in a grotesque, skull-like face that earned him the moniker "Red Skull." His ambition and pursuit of power placed him in direct conflict with Captain America, leading to a climactic battle.
Ultimately, the Red Skull was defeated when he attempted to wield the full power of the Tesseract. He was seemingly disintegrated or transported elsewhere, disappearing from the battlefield. He resurfaced years later in Avengers: Infinity War, revealed to be the guardian of the Soul Stone on Vormir, cursed to guide others to its power and his physical form was changed due to the stone.
