Black Lightning, also known as Jefferson Pierce, is a DC Comics superhero. He first appeared in Black Lightning #1 (1977).
Pierce, a former Olympic athlete, returns to his childhood neighborhood of Suicide Slum in Metropolis to become a high school teacher and principal. Determined to make a difference, he adopts the identity of Black Lightning, a hero with the power to manipulate electricity. He is motivated to take a stand against the local criminal organization known as the 100.
Jefferson Pierce is also the father of fellow DC heroes Thunder and Lightning. Black Lightning's powers are derived from his metagene, granting him the ability to generate and control electricity. He uses these abilities to fight crime and protect his community.
