Captain Atom, also known as Allen Adam, is a character appearing in DC Comics. He first appeared in Space Adventures #33 (March 1960) published by Charlton Comics, later acquired by DC.
Adam was a U.S. Air Force test pilot who volunteered for an experiment involving an alien metal. During the experiment, the metal fused with Adam, and he was seemingly vaporized. However, he was actually dispersed through the quantum field, reassembling later with newfound abilities.
These abilities include superhuman strength, flight, energy projection, and the ability to manipulate matter at a subatomic level. His body is contained by a Dilustel metal skin that is an extension of the alien metal, acting as a containment suit. If this suit is damaged, Captain Atom risks losing control of his powers with potentially devastating consequences.
