Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, more commonly known as Nearly Headless Nick, is the resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower in the Harry Potter series. He first appears in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
In life, Sir Nicholas was a wizard and courtier. He was executed, but the executioner's blunt axe failed to sever his head completely, leaving his head attached by only a thread of skin and sinew. This results in his spectral form being "Nearly Headless".
As a ghost, Nick is sensitive about his incomplete beheading. He desperately desires to join the Headless Hunt, but is repeatedly denied due to his, well, nearly headless state. He befriends Harry Potter and often offers guidance and support to the Gryffindor students.
