Evangelion Unit-01, often called EVA-01 or Shogōki, is a central mecha in the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. It first appears in episode 1 of the series, titled "Angel Attack."
Piloted primarily by Shinji Ikari, EVA-01 is presented as a bio-machine created by NERV to combat the invading Angels. Its purple and green color scheme, along with its humanoid appearance, distinguish it from other Evangelion units.
EVA-01's origins and true nature are shrouded in mystery throughout much of the series. It is later revealed to be connected to Yui Ikari, Shinji's mother, adding a deeply personal and symbolic layer to its relationship with its pilot. It is not a machine, but an artificial human being.
