Biography:
Regan MacNeil is a fictional character most famously portrayed by Linda Blair in the 1973 film The Exorcist, adapted from William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name. She is a 12-year-old girl who becomes possessed by a demonic entity, Pazuzu.
The character's demonic possession is the central conflict of the story, depicting her transformation from a normal child into a profane and violent figure. Her mother, Chris MacNeil, desperately seeks medical and psychiatric help, ultimately turning to the Catholic Church for an exorcism.
Blair's portrayal of Regan earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination. The character's image and dialogue have become iconic in horror cinema, and Regan MacNeil is considered one of the most recognizable and terrifying characters in the genre.
Regan also appears in Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), again portrayed by Blair, which follows her attempts to recover from the trauma of her possession. While less successful than the original, the sequel continues Regan's story.
Ellen Burstyn, as Chris MacNeil, is Regan's mother. Both actresses have portrayed this role to critical acclaim.
