Cyclops, also known as Scott Summers, is a prominent character in the Marvel NOW! era of Marvel Comics. Continuing his evolution from a by-the-book leader, Cyclops in Marvel NOW! is portrayed as a more radical figure, driven by the perceived need to protect mutantkind at any cost.
Following the events of Avengers vs. X-Men, where he was possessed by the Phoenix Force, Cyclops is viewed as a villain by much of the world. He forms a new team of X-Men, often referred to as the "Revolutionary" or "Uncanny" X-Men, recruiting mutants with powers that are often deemed dangerous or unstable. He establishes a new mutant sanctuary, Utopia, and is a wanted fugitive.
His methods are often extreme and controversial, utilizing morally grey tactics and sometimes crossing lines to ensure mutant survival. This contrasts sharply with the more traditional X-Men led by Wolverine. A key aspect of his character during this period is his deteriorating control over his optic blasts, a consequence of the Phoenix Force, furthering his isolation and sense of urgency.
