Gilderoy Lockhart first appears in the film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Lockhart is portrayed as a vain and charismatic wizard, known for his elaborate tales of heroism and bravery, documented in his numerous autobiographical books. He is a celebrity within the wizarding world, adored for his supposed accomplishments.

However, it is soon revealed that Lockhart is a fraud. He achieved his fame by stealing the stories and memories of other, genuinely skilled witches and wizards, using Memory Charms to erase their recollections and claim their deeds as his own.

His incompetence is exposed during the events of the Chamber of Secrets when he attempts to confront the monster within but ultimately fails, accidentally erasing his own memory with a faulty Memory Charm. He is subsequently confined to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.
