Abin Sur was a Green Lantern of Sector 2814, the sector encompassing Earth. A highly respected and skilled member of the Green Lantern Corps, he was known for his courage, wisdom, and close friendship with fellow Lantern Sinestro.
He was mortally wounded while pursuing the villain Atrocitus. His spacecraft crashed on Earth. Knowing he was dying, Abin Sur used his power ring to search for a worthy successor.
The ring ultimately chose Hal Jordan, a test pilot, granting him immense power and responsibility. Abin Sur's death and the transfer of his ring marked the beginning of Hal Jordan's career as Green Lantern.
