Taneleer Tivan, known as The Collector, first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13 (November 1960). He is one of the Elders of the Universe, beings who are survivors of extinct, ancient races. Driven by a powerful compulsion to collect, he amasses artifacts and living beings from across the cosmos, preserving them in his massive museum.

The Collector views his hobby as a way to safeguard life from cataclysmic events, a sort of Noah's Ark across galaxies. However, his methods are often ethically questionable, as he frequently acquires his specimens through coercion or outright theft, with little regard for their well-being or freedom. His vast collection and powerful cosmic awareness make him a formidable, if eccentric, figure in the Marvel Universe.

He is often portrayed as manipulative and cunning, prioritizing his collection above all else, even at the expense of others.
