Hector Barbossa is a pivotal character in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. He begins as the mutinous first mate of the Black Pearl, betraying Captain Jack Sparrow to seize command and searching for the Isla de Muerta treasure.
Initially portrayed as a villain, Barbossa is cursed along with his crew, becoming immortal skeletons who can only feel again when exposed to moonlight. He seeks to break the curse by returning the Aztec gold.
Over the course of the series, Barbossa's character evolves. He aligns himself with, and against, Sparrow on multiple occasions, often pursuing his own self-serving interests.
