Ryuk is a Shinigami (god of death) from the popular manga and anime series, *Death Note*. He first appears in *Death Note* Chapter , published December .
Bored with the Shinigami realm, Ryuk drops his Death Note into the human world, hoping to alleviate his boredom by observing the actions of whoever finds it. A Death Note allows its user to kill anyone by writing their name in the notebook, provided they know the person's face.
Ryuk is characterized by his grotesque appearance: leathery skin, sharp teeth, and large, feathered wings. He follows Light Yagami, the human who finds the Death Note, observing his actions with amusement and occasionally offering commentary, driven largely by his addiction to apples.
