Darth Maul is a fearsome Sith Lord and apprentice to Darth Sidious, introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), the first of the Star Wars Prequels. He is a master of martial arts and wields a distinctive double-bladed lightsaber.
Maul's mission in The Phantom Menace is to eliminate Queen Amidala and any Jedi who stand in the way of the Trade Federation's blockade of Naboo. He engages in a fierce lightsaber duel with Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, ultimately killing Qui-Gon before being defeated by Obi-Wan.
Despite seemingly being killed in The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul survives and later reappears in the animated TV show, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
