Gloin is a character from J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy world of Middle Earth, specifically one of the Dwarfs who accompanies Bilbo Baggins on his adventure in *The Hobbit*. He first appears in the book *The Hobbit*, published in 1937.
He is a member of Thorin Oakenshield's company, journeying to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim their ancestral treasure from the dragon Smaug. Gloin is portrayed as a practical and somewhat grumpy Dwarf, skilled with tools and weapons.
Gloin is also the father of Gimli, who later becomes a prominent member of the Fellowship of the Ring. Gloin attends the Council of Elrond in *The Lord of the Rings*, where he provides news from Erebor and warns of Mordor's growing influence.
