Gloin is a Dwarf character from J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth stories, most notably The Hobbit.
He first appears in The Hobbit as one of the twelve Dwarves who accompany Thorin Oakenshield on his quest to reclaim the treasure of Erebor from the dragon Smaug. Gloin is the brother of Óin, and the father of Gimli, who would later become a member of the Fellowship of the Ring.
During the quest, Gloin is a practical and somewhat skeptical member of the company. He provides much-needed fire and tinder on the journey and offers insight during discussions. He later participates in the Battle of Five Armies. Gloin's later appearance, recounting the tale of Erebor, is also mentioned in *The Fellowship of the Ring.*
