Duke Thomas is a prominent character in the DC Comics Batman universe, known for his exceptional intelligence and unique connection to Gotham City. Unlike many of Batman's allies, Duke is not a sidekick in the traditional sense. He's presented as a meta-human with the ability to perceive and manipulate photons, allowing him to see and interact with different realities and possible futures. This power is linked to his lineage from the mythic Barbatos.

Originally introduced during the "Zero Year" storyline, Duke first appears as a resourceful young boy who aids Batman during a city-wide crisis. He later becomes a member of the We Are Robin movement, a group of teenagers inspired by Batman's actions.

Eventually, recognizing Duke's potential and special abilities, Batman takes him under his wing, but not as another Robin. He becomes a daytime crime fighter known as "The Signal," operating in Gotham's daylight hours to differentiate his role from Batman's nocturnal activities. This reflects Duke's optimistic and hopeful perspective on the city's future. His character represents a different kind of hero, one driven by hope and a desire to bring light to the darkest corners of Gotham.
