Barney Gumble is a recurring character in the animated TV show, The Simpsons. He is Homer Simpson's best friend and a well-meaning, though perpetually drunk, resident of Springfield.
Barney's first appearance was in the first episode of The Simpsons, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" (1989). He is best known for his signature belches, slurred speech, and his frequent presence at Moe's Tavern.
Despite his alcoholism, Barney has occasionally shown glimpses of other talents and ambitions, such as being a skilled helicopter pilot and an aspiring filmmaker. He is often a source of comic relief and a satirical representation of addiction.
