Ra's al Ghul, whose name translates to "Head of the Demon", is a prominent antagonist in the DC Comics universe, most notably as a recurring foe of Batman. He first appeared in Batman #232 (June 1971).

Driven by his belief that humanity's progress has led to societal decay, Ra's al Ghul seeks to cleanse the Earth through mass destruction, aiming to create a new world order under his leadership. He is the head of the League of Assassins, a vast and highly trained organization dedicated to achieving his goals.

Ra's al Ghul maintains his immortality and extended lifespan through the Lazarus Pits, pools of mysterious chemicals with restorative properties. However, these pits also induce temporary madness, adding to his unpredictable nature. His dedication to his cause borders on fanaticism. While often portrayed as a villain, Ra's al Ghul views himself as a necessary evil, a guardian protecting the planet from its own self-destructive tendencies.
