Ra's al Ghul, whose name translates to "Head of the Demon," is a prominent DC Comics villain and adversary of Batman. He first appeared in Batman #232 (June 1971).

He is an eco-terrorist whose goals include eliminating most of humanity to restore the Earth to a pristine state. Ra's possesses centuries of accumulated knowledge and resources, making him a formidable strategist and opponent.

His extended lifespan is due to his repeated immersion in the Lazarus Pit, a pool of mystical chemicals that grants near-immortality and healing properties, but at the cost of temporary insanity. He considers Batman his ideal heir and seeks to have the hero join him in his crusade, a proposal Batman consistently rejects.
