C-3PO (later designated C-3PO) began as a passion project of a young Anakin Skywalker on the desert planet Tatooine. Created from scrap metal and discarded parts, he was not initially gold-plated nor protocol-focused.
His original purpose was primarily as a helper, designed to assist Anakin with various tasks and provide companionship. His initial programming was rudimentary, lacking the vast language skills and knowledge of etiquette he would later possess.
The droid's appearance was notably different in his early stages. He was often seen with exposed wiring and mismatched components, reflecting his humble origins and cobbled-together construction. He essentially was a prototype, a learning project for Anakin's impressive mechanical aptitude.
After Anakin left Tatooine to train as a Jedi, C-3PO's memory was wiped by Shmi Skywalker, and would later be owned by many people and given a gold plating and protocol focus and programming.
