Leonard Hofstadter is a fictional character from the American television sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, first appearing in the pilot episode in 2007. He is portrayed by actor Johnny Galecki.

Leonard is an experimental physicist with an IQ of 173. He holds a Ph.D. and works at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He frequently collaborates with his roommate and best friend, Sheldon Cooper.

Throughout the series, Leonard's defining character trait is his persistent pursuit of romantic relationships, especially with his across-the-hall neighbor, Penny. Their on-again, off-again relationship is a central plot element of the show, eventually leading to marriage.

Despite his scientific intelligence, Leonard often displays insecurities stemming from his strained relationship with his overachieving mother, a neuroscientist. He is generally depicted as the most grounded and socially aware member of his friend group.
