The Punisher, also known as Frank Castle, is a vigilante anti-hero appearing in Marvel Comics. Created by writer Gerry Conway and artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru, he made his first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (February 1974).
Frank Castle's origin stems from the brutal murder of his family (wife and two children) during a mob shootout in Central Park. A Vietnam War veteran, Castle, disillusioned by the justice system, adopts the persona of the Punisher to wage a one-man war against crime. He believes conventional law enforcement is ineffective and embraces lethal methods, including torture and murder, to eliminate criminals.
The Punisher is characterized by his ruthless efficiency, strategic planning, and proficiency in weaponry and hand-to-hand combat. He is typically depicted wearing a black suit adorned with a white skull emblem on his chest.
