Arachne is the codename used by several characters in Marvel Comics, most notably Julia Carpenter. She debuted in 1984's Secret Wars #6.
Julia Carpenter was a single mother working for a government-sponsored "volunteer" study. Unbeknownst to her, the experiment involved injecting her with a mix of spider venom and plant extracts. This granted her powers similar to Spider-Man, but of a different origin.
Her abilities include superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, reflexes, and the ability to produce psionic webs, which she can use to ensnare opponents or create shields. Initially, her powers were dependent on a suit created by the scientists, but she later learned to manifest them without it.
