Rescued by Batman and kept captive, Batman had convinced him of his usefulness, but the abuse and mental torture at the hands of the Joker were too much, and he later escaped his captivity, resenting Batman for his perceived abandonment. The Arkham Knight's primary goal is to inflict psychological and physical torment on Batman.
