Cassandra Cain, known as Black Bat, is a prominent character in the DC Comics universe. She is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva, raised from birth to be the ultimate weapon.

Deprived of language and human contact during her formative years, Cassandra's brain instead developed an extraordinary ability to read body language, allowing her to predict movements with unparalleled accuracy. This rendered her a nearly unbeatable martial artist, but also left her initially unable to speak or read.

Introduced during the "No Man's Land" storyline in Batman comics, Cassandra eventually came under Batman's tutelage. He helped her learn language and integrate into society, although she continued to struggle with social interaction and her past.

Cassandra has served as Batgirl, and later adopted the identity of Black Bat to distance herself from that mantle, especially as other Batgirls emerged. Her dedication to justice and her internal struggle with her violent upbringing define her character.
