Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 17, 1936, is the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church. Ordained a priest in 1969, he served as Archbishop of Buenos Aires from 1998 until his election as Pope in 2013.
A member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Francis holds a master's degree in chemistry. He rose through the ranks of the Church, becoming a bishop in 1992 and a cardinal in 2001.
Elected following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Francis is the first Pope from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first Jesuit Pope. He has been noted for his humility, commitment to the poor, and openness to dialogue. His papacy has focused on issues such as climate change, social justice, and interfaith relations.
