Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (1921-2021), was the consort of Queen Elizabeth II. Born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, he renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles and became a naturalized British subject in 1947, taking the surname Mountbatten from his mother's family.
He served in the Royal Navy during World War II and married Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she ascended to the throne. He was known for his dedication to supporting the Queen in her duties and for his own extensive charitable work, particularly through The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, which encourages young people's personal development.
Philip retired from public duties in 2017, having completed over 20,000 solo engagements. He was the longest-serving royal consort in British history.
