Biography:
Emmeline Pankhurst (1858-1928) was a British political activist and leader of the suffragette movement. She is best known for her instrumental role in securing women's right to vote in Britain.
Born Emmeline Goulden in Manchester, she became involved in the women's suffrage movement from a young age. In 1903, frustrated with the lack of progress through constitutional means, she founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU).
The WSPU, under Pankhurst's leadership, adopted increasingly militant tactics, including civil disobedience, arson, and hunger strikes. These actions, while controversial, brought considerable attention to the cause of women's suffrage. She was frequently arrested and imprisoned for her activities.
Following World War I, during which Pankhurst supported the war effort, Parliament granted women over 30 the right to vote in 1918. Full suffrage for women on equal terms with men was achieved in 1928, shortly after her death. Emmeline Pankhurst is remembered as a key figure in the fight for women's rights and a symbol of the power of direct action.
