Norman Bates is a fictional character most famously portrayed by Anthony Perkins in the horror film Psycho (1960), directed by Alfred Hitchcock. He is the central figure in the film and its sequels, as well as a television series.
Norman is the seemingly mild-mannered proprietor of the Bates Motel, a secluded establishment off the main highway. He lives in a large, dilapidated Victorian house adjacent to the motel with his domineering and invalid mother, Norma Bates.
Beneath his shy and awkward exterior, Norman suffers from a severe mental illness. He embodies the disturbing archetype of the "psycho" guy, struggling with a split personality and a deeply unhealthy relationship with his deceased mother.
