Donnie Brasco is the alias of Joseph D. Pistone, an FBI agent who infiltrated the Bonanno crime family in New York City during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Pistone joined the FBI after graduating from college.
Under the guise of a jewel thief named Donnie Brasco, Pistone successfully infiltrated the Mafia, spending six years undercover. He gained the trust of mobsters like Benjamin "Lefty" Ruggiero, and his work provided invaluable intelligence to the FBI.
His operation, codenamed "Sun-Apple," led to over 200 indictments and over 100 convictions of Mafia members. Pistone's work severely damaged the Bonanno family and exposed the inner workings of organized crime.
After his undercover work ended, Pistone testified against the Mafia and became a target for their vengeance. He has since lived under an assumed name and continues to work as a consultant and author on organized crime.
