Biography:
Judah Ben-Hur is the titular character in Lew Wallace's 1880 novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, and its numerous adaptations. Born a wealthy Jewish prince in Jerusalem, Ben-Hur lives during the time of Jesus Christ.
Ben-Hur's life takes a dramatic turn when his childhood friend, Messala, now a Roman tribune, returns to Judea. Their conflicting loyalties and political stances lead to a betrayal, resulting in Ben-Hur's false accusation of attempted assassination of the Roman governor. He is subsequently enslaved, his family imprisoned.
Stripped of his status and separated from his loved ones, Ben-Hur endures years of galley slavery. His thirst for revenge against Messala fuels his survival. He is eventually freed by a Roman admiral and trains as a charioteer.
Ben-Hur's ultimate confrontation with Messala occurs in a climactic chariot race. He triumphs, crippling Messala and gaining freedom for himself. Throughout his journey, he encounters figures connected to Jesus and is profoundly affected by their faith. Ultimately, witnessing the crucifixion of Jesus leads to his conversion to Christianity.
