Walker's origins vary depending on the comic book continuity. In some versions, he is a former prisoner who learned about criminal psychology and designed a costume resembling a moth to strike fear. Other iterations portray him as a disgruntled textile worker or a man driven to crime by societal rejection.

Killer Moth's arsenal typically includes a Mothmobile, a cocoon gun, and Moth-Signal, all mimicking Batman's equipment. He often hires himself out as a "villain protector," creating a Bat-Signal-like Moth-Signal for criminals to use when in need of rescue. His lack of competence and outlandish methods often lead to his downfall. In the Mighty Micro's storyline, he is a small racer with a bright green vehicle.
