Garthan Saal, a Nova Corps Officer, is a significant character within the Marvel Universe, primarily known for his enhanced Nova powers and his complex relationship with Richard Rider, the quintessential Nova. His first appearance was in the comic book Fantastic Four #208 in 1979.

Saal was one of the original members of the Nova Corps from the planet Xandar. Following the destruction of Xandar, Saal was among the few survivors who absorbed the power of the entire Nova Force, becoming incredibly powerful. This influx of power led to instability and eventually, antagonism towards Rider. Saal's primary motivation often revolved around restoring Xandar and protecting the Nova Force, even if it meant conflicting with other heroes.

Garthan Saal, often called Supernova, has displayed tremendous power. However, his emotional instability has been his undoing. He’s played the role of both ally and adversary depending on the circumstances.
