Biography:
Penance, first appearing in *Civil War* #1 (2006), is the superhero identity assumed by Robbie Baldwin, previously known as Speedball. He is a character from Marvel Comics.
Following the Stamford Incident, where his powers contributed to a catastrophic explosion that killed hundreds, Baldwin was captured and subjected to experimentation by the government. This experimentation altered his powers and physiology.
As Penance, Robbie is characterized by his emaciated appearance and self-inflicted pain. The suit forces him to feel pain, which is how his powers are activated and controlled. He initially served with the Thunderbolts, a team of reformed villains and anti-heroes.
His powers as Penance are similar to Speedball's kinetic energy manipulation, but now triggered by pain. He can release powerful energy blasts and create force fields, but at the cost of constant suffering.
