Biography:
Father Damien Karras is a central character in the horror film The Exorcist (1973). A Jesuit psychiatrist grappling with a crisis of faith, Karras is deeply troubled by his mother's illness and subsequent death.
His expertise in psychology leads him to initially doubt the demonic possession of young Regan MacNeil. However, as Regan's condition worsens and displays undeniable signs of supernatural influence, Karras becomes convinced of the need for an exorcism.
Ultimately, Father Karras sacrifices himself during the exorcism, provoking the demon Pazuzu to possess him and then leaping from a window to save Regan. His struggle with faith and the confronting of ultimate evil forms a major theme of the film.
