Big Boss, also known as Naked Snake and originally named John, is a central figure in the Metal Gear video game series. He is renowned as the greatest soldier of the 20th century.
Born in the 1930s, John was recruited by the legendary soldier The Boss, becoming her apprentice and mastering close-quarters combat and stealth tactics. He participated in numerous covert operations for the United States throughout the Cold War.
His involvement in Operation Snake Eater in 1964, where he was forced to kill The Boss, deeply affected him and led to his disillusionment with government manipulation. This event, combined with other betrayals, fueled his desire to create a soldier's nation free from political control: Outer Heaven.
Big Boss's actions ultimately positioned him as the antagonist of the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake games. He is considered the genetic father of Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake, through the "Les Enfants Terribles" project, a government experiment to create clones with his superior soldier genes. His legacy has remained a major narrative driver throughout the series.
