Mastermind, whose real name is Jason Wyngarde, is a mutant villain from Marvel Comics. He possesses the powerful ability to create illusions that can be perceived as reality by others.
Wyngarde first appeared in *The X-Men* #4 (March 1964). Initially a member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, his illusion-casting abilities made him a formidable opponent for the X-Men. He often uses his powers to manipulate events and sow discord.
He became infatuated with Jean Grey. Using his powers, he projected an image of Jean as the Black Queen of the Hellfire Club into her mind. This led her to act against the X-Men and ultimately led to her becoming the Phoenix.
